The Fourth of July is a favorite holiday for many Americans. They can spend the day with the family, enjoy a cookout, watch a parade, light some sparklers, set off some small backyard fire crackers, and then go out to watch a fantastic fireworks display. It is a fun, exciting, and even tiring holiday. What gets lost in the celebration, though, is what it is that is being celebrated! Yes, we know it’s “Independence Day,” the day the American colonists declared their independence from England, but why is that so significant?
Find sometime before the celebrating to watch some of these 4th of July movies with the whole family. Some are perfect for younger children and some are great for teens. They are all entertaining and educational. Learning a little about what led to the first 4th of July, as well as the people behind it all, can make the celebrating much more meaningful.
