August holidaysThe month of August is the month when many children head back to school or start school for the first time. It’s not surprising, then, that the month has been designated National Back to School Month and Get Ready for Kindergarten Month. But that’s not all there is to August holidays and observances. It’s also National Inventors Month.

In addition to the month-long observances, August also has some great weekly observances. The second week, for example, is National Scrabble Week. And then there are some fun holidays and observances throughout the month, many of which are of particular interest to gifted kids. Dinosaur Day, observed on the second day of August is one of those days. These observances provide opportunities not just for fun, but for education. For instance, Individual Rights Day is a good time to help your child learn about John Locke and the concept of individual rights. (Unless otherwise noted, the holidays and observances occur every year on the same day(s).)
